Flies in the Ammo Shack

(A Vietnam War story about Flies, 1971)

It was a warm afternoon inside the bullets dump, inside rounds shack-consisting of a couple of rooms, walls built out of particle board, floors or inlays of long wooden boards-flat timber with regard to the most element, you may see via their cracks, located crooked alongside a single another; also typically the shack was some sort of smite lopsided, almost wobbly, and very broken. Planted about four by several beams underneath the floorboards, about a fifty percent foot high, amongst the soft white mud that surrounded it, providing an playground for the lizards to engage in excitement, unnoticed.

I transported a semi old ‘Stars and Strips, ‘ magazine with me at night when I had to visit the bullets shack (where us soldiers did our own paperwork for allocations and distributing associated with ammunition to the convoys arriving from many locations in the area.

I carried of which old ‘Stars and even Strips, ‘ magazine for a calendar month, until a new one came out, and used it to swish away from flies. They were everywhere in the ammo shack-we were infested with these, with their buzzing around since if we had been invaders: fat plus thin bellied data; some dark other folks light shads associated with dark, long plus short winged lures, biting your hands and face, plus ears, behind the neck, swarming close to you, sneaking the shirt sleeves, scuba diving into your eye like they have been small punishing missiles, trained with the Vietcong to annoy a person. -me, us!

There are 308 ammo or passing away flies, also strolling flies on each of the three desks inside the two rooms in the shack, filling typically the atmosphere with putrid debris, aiming toward one’s mouth, nevertheless quite content whenever they missed, and basically landed on your current lips. They polluted everything, clinging, in addition to climbing, as well as a few crawling, within their quickest gait possible, specifically the big excess fat bellied ones, they’d try to get away but I had created swat them, unfortunately leaving a dumpy-bloody mess, I truly attempted to simply terrify them away, yet like I said before-or implied, these were already brained laundered and ready in order to sacrifice their existence for the cause.
